Professional background:

Tom is a shareholder and Senior Advisor to Diamond Asset Advisors. He is currently the principal of Gelb Gemological Consulting where he has advised numerous diamond firms helping them achieve greater gemological and operational results. He has worked in the diamond industry for nearly 20 years. He began his career at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in 1993, where as a diamond grader, he evaluated diamonds for their color and clarity. He received his Graduate Gemologist degree in 1995 at which time that he started focusing on colored diamonds. By the time he left in 2008 he was managing the colored diamond department. In that capacity Tom evaluated some of the most important diamonds in the world including the Hope diamond. He also co-authored two award winning articles about colored diamonds, and published more than a dozen short articles about diamonds and their treatments.In 2008 Tom left the GIA to become the manager of the grading laboratory at Harry Winston. In this role Tom managed the quality assurance staff that looked at each gem in every piece of Harry Winston jewelry to confirm that they reached the high standards set by Mr. Winston. He also streamlined their processes and created an inventory ordering system. In 2009 Tom left Harry Winston and founded Gelb Gemological Consulting which provides gemological and business consulting to the diamond trade and the public. Some of his projects have included re-cutting analysis of colored diamonds to improve their clarity grade, creating presentations for industry speakers about diamonds, and writing inventory programs to help businesses become more efficient. He also serves as the Educational Director for the Natural Color Diamond Association (NCDIA).

Education:

Along with his Graduate Gemologist degree from the GIA, Tom holds an MBA from Columbia University School of Business in New York, and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
